Thanks to MacRumors, MacObserver, and MacCentral, and of course Apple.com, we now have official word on the rumored new Apple LCD Cinema widescreen displays, including the 30″ LCD, and here’s the facts…
Rather than making you comb through pages of information, here’s all the useful details. Apple has announced three new Apple Cinema widescreen LCD displays.
It starts with a revamp of the 23″ Cinema display, sporting a new look, thin bevel (as compared to the wide bevel of the previous incarnation), a one-piece aluminum casing and stand, but the same 1920x1200 resolution. It still has a single cable design leaving the display, but the end of the cable has changed, apparently splitting into a standard DVI connector, FireWire, and USB 2.0. The display has dual USB 2.0 ports and dual FireWire ports. This should mean great things for all the PC enthusiasts looking for a better display, who wanted DVI and not ADC-converted connection. Also, the VESA wall mounts will do well for home theater convergence uses.
Additionally, the 20″ Cinema display, still at 1680x1050 resolution, will also get the visual/mechanical revamp of its sibling. It has the same ports as the 23″, single cable out, and the simple split to a DVI connection.
The 20″ will retain its $1299 pricetag, and the 23″ will keep its $1999 pricetag, of course with completely new features/improvements.
The big news is the new Apple 30″ Cinema display. It will have all the connectivity options of the other two, has an incredible 2560x1600 resolution, and is priced to move at $3299. However, it will apparently only work in a G5 with a brand new nVidia graphics card that has a dual-link DVI interface and a pricetag of $599. No word yet on whether such a card will hit the PC/Linux markets, or whether competitors (ATI?) will have a dual-link DVI card that can drive it – one would assume that ATI’s long role in the Mac industry would almost force them to make a supporting card, quickly. ![]()
The new 20″ and 23″ Cinema displays will be available in July, with the new 30″ Cinema display showing up in August. Get your pre-orders in now (or snap up the priced-to-move older models!).
