Wow. Now every kid on the block can have a terabyte of storage at their beck and call!
Don’t let the slim enclosure fool you – this isn’t your ordinary HTPC. While Interact-TV has been selling their Telly home theater PCs pretty well, they just upped the ante. They have taken their higher-end chassis and decked it out with 1.2 Terabytes of hard-drive storage space, enough so that you’ll never have to delete a picture, song, or video for a very, very long time (okay, except if you’ve slurping down hi-def feeds!).
The new model, the TeraTelly, is starting to ship this month with configurations starting under $2000 US, and as it’s an ‘upgraded’ Telly model, it comes packed with a full set of HTPC features. The Telly HTPCs run a custom Linux operating system and software components, designed for the best HTPC experience out there. And, the unit being customizable, you can pick what extra options you want or need in the box. It’s designed to blend right in to your existing home theater, with an ultra-quiet power supply and fan (and they note that is “unlike a media center PC”,
).
The TeraTelly is easy to set up, just connect it to your TV and stereo, plug in power and network, and go! The TeraTelly is accessible to your LAN, so you can store all your home media on it for viewing on the attached TV or other devices. The base configuration comes with a standard DVD drive for playing DVDs, or for ripping them to disk for later watching (and they claim up to 250 DVDs will fit). Of course, you can also upgrade to a DVD/CDRW combo drive so you can burn your own CDs, or a full DVDRW for the most storage capacity for offline archiving.
The built-in DVD player, CD player, video player, music player, and photo viewer modules give you the ultimate HTPC experience, with easy access to any type of media you have. The Telly also has a full web interface for remote management and control, and interfaces well with other networked media player devices. With its internet connectivity via standard 10/100 ethernet port, it also provides modules for internet radio playback, weather reports, financial portfolio tracking, and even movie showtimes!
When configured with a TV tuner, the Telly has a free Electronic Program Guide (like TVGuide) with full PVR functionality (record TV, pause live TV, playback recorded shows), even giving full manual recording control and recording-conflict resolution system for overlapping programs. No fees like a TiVo, just buy it and go. You can also remotely schedule your Telly to record, right from the Telly website.
The front panel that hides the DVD drive also has audio, USB, and Firewire connectors for jacking in headphones or even MORE storage (like you’d need that!). The rear of the unit has VGA, composite, and s-video outs, plus standard mini-jack audio outs – and support for Dolby Digital 5.1 coax audio output if you don’t use the composite out, as it serves double-duty. It also has composite/s-video input, RF input, and stereo-minijack audio input, for bringing in your cable box, satellite, or other A/V source.
The base config of the TeraTelly includes 512MB of ram, a wireless keyboard and IR trackball remote, composite A/V cables, and a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and 1 year limited warranty. There’s also an optional IR blaster module for controlling your satellite/cable box, and an optional WiFi adapter so you don’t need to drag a network cable to the unit.
