GPX is ramping up some impressive new products, and the SportX HW6805DT Headphone MP3 Player looks like one to watch.
Announced earlier this year, the imminent SportX headset player looks like a fairly lightweight model (though specs not yet given), with main electronics at back of neck rather than built into bulky earphones. The SportX handles MP3 and WMA audio files, with full Windows Media DRM for download stores, has a digital FM tuner built-in with station presets, and five equalizer modes. Power comes from a rechargeable, removeable, battery cell, and data transfers are over speedy USB 2.0.
The real kicker may be that the unit supports the new TransFlash storage cards (32MB-256MB at the moment), for adding music on the go. While TF is an expensive format at the moment, it is taking off due to cell phones and needs for smaller/lightweight data cards, and seems most prominent in mp3-capable phones. So, wouldn’t be unusual for you to take a card from your phone, pop it in the headset, and go for a jog! And obviously, both the card, and the ‘reader’ electronics, are significantly smaller and lighter-weight than technology like SD cards – which makes it perfect for ‘wearable’ players.
The 128MB model is already listed on Amazon.com for pre-order at around $80 (actually, via Target.com, which is becoming a popular Amazon tech source), despite GPX having said the unit would launch at a street price around $99 in May. The 256MB and 512MB models will follow at some later time. Check our Amazon link here for availability and pricing.
We’ll let you know if we can get a unit in for review. Read on for the full press release.
